I know the whistle blows, but what if a puck is going, or would have gone, in? What is the rule for this in the NHL? I was told that if you are a defensive player and knock the net off, the other team is automatically awarded a goal. That seems dumb to me...
So what is the rule? Proof or examples, please! :)

If a defensive player knocks it off deliberately it is a delay of game. If the puck goes in after the net comes off no goal unless it was intentional to prevent the goal in which case the goal can be awarded.
I'm not exactly sure of the exact circumstances for each, you need the answer of an expert and or rule guy. Lubers would be best but there are many other knowledgeable posters on here. Lity or Bob etc.

- Last I heard, if and offense player unintentionally knocks the net off it goes out of the zone, if a defender unintentionally knocks the net off it goes the the face off circle. If a player is pushed in the location corresponds to the player that initiated the contact/momentum. If a player intentionally knocks off the net to stop play it is a delay of game penalty.
It is possible that if the net is knocked, off as the puck is going in, for the sole purpose of disallowing the goal, they might award it. I think we'll need to consult the house enyclopedia (LITY) on this one.

26.2 Infractions – When Goalkeeper is On the Ice – A goal will be awarded when an attacking player, in the act of shooting the puck into the goal (between the normal position of the posts and completely across the goal line), is prevented from scoring as a result of a defending player or goalkeeper displacing the goal post, either deliberately or accidentally.Source(s):
NHL Rule book - If the puck goes in before it is off the moorings than it is a goal. If the defensive player pushes it off prior to the puck going in I am pretty sure it is a penalty not a goal (I am sure someone smarter than I would know for sure). If the net is off the moorings the play is dead.
- If the puck goes in the net before the net is moved its a goal. If the net is moved then the puck goes in or was about to, they look over the play to see if the player intentionaly did it if so then he gets a penalty
- As soon as the net is moved, the whistle is blown. No goal will be counted if the puck enters the net after it has moved. There really is no rule, but if you knocked the net off on purpose, you will get a penalty for delay of game.
- If the net was knocked off on purpose by the defending team while the puck is going into the net, they're awarded the goal, if it's an accident, it's no goal.
P.S.: Go Sens! - I have NEVER seen another team awarded a goal for a defensive player knocking the net off!
I think the play just stops, if there was goalie interference, a penalty may be given. - i think if a defensive player or goalie move the net on purpose, they can be penalized if the puck had any kind of chance to go into the net
