How has the panama canal helped transport goods?

I have a project due and i need to know how the Panama canal has helped transport goods.

Look at a map of the Western Hemisphere. Imagine you have a ship in New York and you want to sail to Honolulu. If there was no Panama canal, you would have to sail south and go around the tip of South America and then sail north to reach Hawaii.

Imagine you are on a ship in Japan and you want to deliver a Toyota to London. If there was no canal you would have to sail south and go around the southern tip of South America and then sail north to reach London.

The Panama canal is a shortcut. It saves time and fuel and that means it saves MONEY!
